Stocking almost a quarter of a million books, music and video titles, plus one of the largest magazine selections in the UK, this American import has become a leading light in book and music retail. Despite the vast inventory, the uncluttered approach gives it a loftily light appeal, allowing you to leisurely browse through shelves stocked with "everything from African poetry to Zoroastrian theology" or seek help from the friendly and informed staff. Afterwards you can flake out in the second-floor cafe, leaf through your latest buy with a cappuccino, or muse through the floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic views of Oxford Street. At weekends, the store holds special events for children. Both Borders stores in London schedule in-store appearances and talks by authors, musicians and artists. Check with the store for individual programmes. The new London branch can be found at 120 Charing Cross Road, just a 15 minute walk away, with a similarly impressive stock and another sublime Borders Cafe.
