You'll find Calabash hidden in the basement of the Africa Centre in Covent Garden. Soothing Zulu choral music greets you, even though the surroundings are somewhat uninspiring. The food is not disappointing, however, Calabash makes an inspired and, on the whole, successful attempt at representing cuisine from all over Africa, providing an excellent introduction to authentic African food. Dishes such as the Malawian Beef Stewed with Potatoes and, from Senegal, Chicken Marinated with Lemon Juice and Peppers are excellent and good value, as is the house wine at around £8 a bottle. There's a good range of African wine and beer, too.
