Following the grand Gone With The Wind-style staircase down to the basement, you'll find yourself in an Aladdin's Cave of plush velvet seating and glinting lights. The only treasures in this under-theatre bar though are the arty, thespian types who come to practise their lines and voice projection techniques. This aside, The Phoenix is a vibrant, hip hangout with fascinating decor ranging from autographed posters to the odd stuffed crocodile. The adjoining restaurant serves reliable, inexpensive pub fare. Owing to late licensing laws, this is a members-only venue after 8p, but get here beforehand and you can stay all night.
