Great Eastern is the name of the railway running out of nearby Liverpool Street, but far from being stuffy and train-like, this bar and restaurant is lively, loud and a lot of fun. The decor is quite simple - dark wooden walls and floors create a warm but unspectacular backdrop for an otherwise upbeat venue. It's the energetic staff and boisterous clientele that give the place its youthful feel. Shoreditch may be close to the City, but it is, in fact, very non-City! The Italian food is as simple as the decor - and all well prepared and very tasty. Lots of vegetarian alternatives such as porcini (mushroom) and potato torta (similar to tortilla) with rocket, baby leeks and fried basil are available, and there are some vegan dishes, too. Parties of up to 12 are welcome. Booking is essential for all.
