An impressive Victorian house designed by architect Norman Shaw (who also designed the New Scotland Yard building) for the painter Frederick Goodall. W.S. Gilbert (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame) lived here from 1890-1911. The house is surrounded by 40 acres of garden and parkland and became a hotel in 1970. It was restored and refurbished by the present owners in 1996. It specialises in Gilbert and Sullivan evenings, at which there are performances of their songs and operettas. The hotel is just over ten miles from London's West End, and you can reach the London underground system by taxi to Stanmore or Harrow-on-the-Hill.
