Started in 1995, The Japanese Canteen had high hopes of becoming a popular chain, but it is now whittled down to this flagship restaurant and two take-away outlets. Perhaps it was the lack of coziness about the place that stopped it from catching on, but it certainly makes up for it with the food, which is competitively priced and generous. The staple of the place is bentos - or lunchboxes. Fillings usually range from sushi to tempura, and everything is clearly explained making what could be a daunting menu very accessible. Popular with media/designer-types from The Guardian and The Face nearby, it's a great place to try out some inexpensive Japanese food in a relaxed and friendly environment.
