Billy Elliot, a passionate Stephen Daldry’s musical version, is a work of fabulous flair and tremendous talent. It is a refreshing, gritty, poignant, outlandish, funny, original, touching and shamelessly enjoyable staging. The story is a simple one but it engenders a complexity of emotional response. There is a good helping of eccentricity and humour alongside a more sobering subject matter achieving that rare phenomenon - a musical that makes you think. Tuneful Elton John’s music, admirably fitting the situations Lee Hall’s lyrics, witty and constantly inventive Peter Darling's choreography with great ensemble performances, and the sets, which convey realistic place without taking centre stage, all create an unforgettable impression.
This production of Billy Elliot is darker, grittier, much funnier and more moving than the film. It stands firmly on its own feet and, as such, should be seen and applauded by everyone who appreciates style, taste and superb production values in their theatregoing.
