The first Gay Pride event in Britain took place in the early 1970s, as a way to mark the riots which erupted in June 1969 at New York's Stonewall Inn in protest at police harassment of gay people. Since the very first march, which only attracted a few hundred participants, the annual Pride London event has blossomed into a massive annual parade through the streets of central London, celebrating the diversity and strength of the lesbian and gay community.
