Begun in 1769, the Royal Academy has hosted this oldest, largest and most famous of exhibitions for more than two centuries, and it continues to attract huge crowds of art lovers, lay people and tourists alike. The range of modern art, all by living artists, means that accessibility is high. Any artist may enter work for selection, so talented newcomers may very well be hung next to the work of artists of international repute (including Royal Academicians). Art collectors also flock here, as all the pieces on display are for sale.
