Since it was founded in 1799, The Royal Institution has had a long and fruitful role in scientific research and education, both in the UK and throughout the world. Lectures, seminars, meetings and other events take place here throughout the year, and the RI's flagship lecture series, the Christmas Lectures, has been running since 1826. The RI has been home to many of the great scientists of the last 200 years. Some scientists that worked here in the past include Humphry Davy, Michael Faraday, John Tyndall and James Dewar, as well as the nobel laureates Lord Rayleigh, Sir Joseph J Thomson, Sir Ernest Rutherford, Sir W H Bragg, Sir W L Bragg, Sir Henry H Dale and Lord Porter. The Royal Institution also houses a restoration of Michael Faraday's laboratory and a museum displaying much of the apparatus used by Faraday during his life at the RI.
