London conformists have good reason to be proud of their city. One of the components adding to this melting-pot of cultures is the Shanghai Restaurant in Dalston. Established in 1968, this restaurant's cuisine is a refreshing change from the local Chinese otherwise available. The two huge dining rooms differ tastefully in decor: one is Victorian, with traditional Chinese designs, while the other is more modern, the walls being adorned with appealing Chinese art. Try the recommended Dim Sum: pork-filled fried dumplings, served with red vinegar and ginger strips, and the main course of Baked Fresh Lobster with ginger and spring onions. The Crisp Dragon Rolls are also in great demand. The staff are usually friendly and helpful, and the service is prompt. Celebrations and parties come alive on Shanghai's famous Karaoke nights.
