The Vale offers exceptional food in beautiful surroundings at unexceptional prices. This first-floor restaurant is a godsend for this gastronomy-poor area in particular, the light and airy conservatory dining room is a joy in good weather. Downstairs there's a bar, but patrons rarely seem to come for a drink without popping upstairs too. From spicy lamb samosas and chargrilled mackerel with pickled vegetables to bourride of capon with leeks and saffron, this Northern African-leaning contemporary menu will have you coming back for more. Chef Francesca Melman (who used to cook with Alastair Little) has also managed to infuse British, Mediterranean and French dishes into the selection. The lunch menu offers exceptional value and, with a good selection of wines to accompany your meal, The Vale will not disappoint.
