Wong Kei is renowned for its Formica-fast-food-joint approach to dining. The Cantonese food is cheap and arrives swiftly, if a little churlishly. Strangely, the legend of the rude and abrupt waiting staff is all part of the appeal, and the fact that its pink walls are often packed and jostling is testament to its ongoing popularity. In fact, it's an institution in Chinatown for students and budget diners, and if you're fed up with pleasant, obsequious service then Wong Kei's is remedy enough. At £12 for a set dinner menu (for a minimum of two), you can't really go wrong, and dishes are certainly hale and hearty, if a little heavy. You won't leave hungry, that's for sure. The menu is pretty comprehensive, from basic rice and noodle dishes that redefine bargain bites, to more specialist delicacies, that when translated as 'fried intestines' sometimes lose a little of their appeal...
